With locations in Houston's Second Ward and Fifth Ward, we focus on the communities most impacted by a warming planet and tell stories to create opportunities for more equal well-being within a world of environmental catastrophe.

Our mission is to educate and inspire action on climate and environmental issues through art, exhibits, and programs. We use climate and environmental justice to rethink how museums manage, collect, and display objects. We believe that serious engagement with the climate crisis means rethinking museums at every level. The cross-disciplinary talks, community workshops, and activist gatherings that we host support the local artists and organizers who are holding the fossil fuel and other extractive industries accountable in Houston and in the Gulf South.

Climate justice involves acknowledging that the effects of climate change are not equally distributed. While rising temperatures are important, we broaden visitors’ perspectives of climate justice to include toxic waste and pollution, the effects of industrial agriculture, ocean dead zones, migration and displacement, species extinction, deforestation, and more.

We value multidisciplinary collaboration, bringing together the arts, sciences, and humanities to create inspiring stories and mobilize people toward action to address environmental crises. We work closely with local community members and activists to make sure that the museum’s work is serving the needs of frontline communities and giving a voice to those historically excluded from museum spaces.

We believe that action on the climate crisis takes many forms. Organizing is action, but so is poetry, conversation, and critical description. In order to take meaningful action on the climate crisis, we need new ways to imagine, visualize, and talk about ecological change today.

Exploring ecological relations through the lens of climate justice allows us to radically rethink the role of a museum and who the museum serves. With deep respect for nature, we consider the role of cultural institutions in using art to help our communities imagine ways of being that bring us into right relationship to the earth. At the same time, the urgency of the climate crisis requires us to examine the roots of colonialism and racism entrenched in our society and the extractive industries that reinforce them. Our values guide us in this work and help us join with allies and coalition partners to envision and build a just climate future.
